MacKenzie signs with Buffalo

Former Calgary Hitmen defenceman Matt MacKenzie has signed a three year entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres.  MacKenzie, known as Walt during his time in Calgary, was a third round pick of the Sabres in 2010.  The 20-year-old will not return to the Tr-City Americans instead opting to turn pro.  This move also means the Hitmen will not receive a third round pick in 2013 from the Americans.  That clause was in January's trade agreement and only kicked in if MacKenzie returned to the WHL this season.

Here is the official media release from the Sabres

(Rochester, NY)... Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has signed defenseman Matt MacKenzie to a three-year entry level NHL contract.
MacKenzie was selected by Buffalo in the third round (83rd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In four WHL seasons, MacKenzie has compiled 98 points (18+80) and 180 penalty minutes in 225 games with the Calgary Hitmen and Tri-City Americans.
