Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes scored with point four seconds remaining in the second period in what turned out to be the game winning goal in a 6-5 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen Friday night.
Justin Kirsch scored twice in the loss for Calgary while Alex Gogolev, Jimmy Bubnick and Victor Rask added singles.
The two teams were tied at three after the first period with the Hurricanes owning a 6-4 lead after forty minutes thanks to the buzzer beater from Cam Braes.
Former Calgary AAA Midget Buffalo Jay Merkley had three points (2g 1a) for Lethbridge in a first star performance while Brody Sutter added a pair of goals for the Hurricanes.
For the second straight game this season Calgary owned the lead on the shot clock finishing the night with a 47-37 advantage.
The Hitmen will now take to the community on Saturday appearing at Adrenalin Source for Sports (9309 Macleod Trail SW) from Noon to 3pm. Several players will be on hand to sign autographs along with assistant coach Joel Otto. Anyone who purchases skate sharpening, equipment or a stick will receive a FREE ticket to Sunday’s home opener. Sportsnet Radio The Fan 960 will be live on location. An autograph Hitmen jersey and Anaheim Ducks jersey signed by Hitmen Alumnus Ryan Getzlaf will also be given away.
The Hitmen then return to the ice Sunday afternoon in the Adrenalin Source for Sports Home Opener. Game time is 2pm against the Kootenay Ice at Scotiabank Saddledome.
