In a battle for sole possession of first place in the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference the Calgary Hitmen beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Rexall Place.
Greg Chase led the Calgary scoring attack setting up three goals as the Hitmen move two points ahead of Edmonton for top spot.
The Hitmen have seven regular season games remaining, the Oil Kings nine.
Elliott Peterson and Connor Rankin both scored in the opening period helping Calgary jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Edgars Kudla for Edmonton and Kenton Helgesen for Calgary exchanged second period goals with Helgesen’s coming on the powerplay as the eventual game winner.
The Oil Kings carried the play in the third period outshooting Calgary 23-9 but could only beat Chris Driedger once on a goal from Mitchell Moroz. Driedger finished the game with 38 saves to pick up the win.
Brady Brassart had a second period assist to extend this career high point scoring streak to 15 games.
The Hitmen went 1-5 on the powerplay while killing all four Edmonton chances.
