Hitmen open pre-season with a 6-3 win over Medicine Hat

Jake Virtanen and Rdel Fazleev both had a goal and two assists as the Calgary Hitmen opened their six game WHL pre-season schedule with a 6-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Layne Bensmiller, Austin Calladine, Ben Thomas and Braden Oleksyn also scored for Calgary who scored three of the games first four goals.

Mack Shields made 30 saves, including 17 in the second period, to pick up the win as the Tigers outshot the Hitmen 33-29.

Both teams had eight powerplay chances with Medicine Hat scoring twice with the extra attacker and the Hitmen once.

Calgary is back in action Sunday at 3pm at the Edmonton Oil Kings Invitational Pre-Season Tournament when they face Swift Current in St. Albert.

Team Black posts a 6-5 win in Annual Intra-Squad Game

The Calgary Hitmen wrapped up training camp on Tuesday with their annual Black Vs. White Intra-Sqaud Game. 

Calder Brooks and Chase Lang both had a goal and an assist as Team Black hung on for a 6-5 win. 

Jake Virtanen chipped in a pair of assists for Team Black who built a 3-0 first period lead.

Chase Clayton and Greg Chase both had a goal and an assist for Team White in the loss while Radel Fazleyev had a pair of assists.

The guest coaching bragging rights go to Josh Humphries from Sportsnet960 The Fan who helped coach Team Black while Mookie and Billy Jo from Lite 959 took the loss.

Over 50 returning players, list players and camp invites were put through a series of five tests conducted by Hitmen strength and conditioning coach Sean Hope-Ross.

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club will open their 2013 training camp on Thursday, August 22nd at the Don Hartman North East Sportsplex, 5206 - 68 Street NE. 

Over 120 prospects and veterans are expected to attend the six-day camp that will include fitness testing, goalie development and on-ice practices and games.  The camp will be highlighted by the annual Calgary Hitmen Intra-Squad Game, held Tuesday, August 27 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

All on-ice training camp sessions, including the intra-squad game, are free and open to the public.  Rosters will be available at the Don Hartman North East Sportsplex.
